I think it’s pretty obvious I love designing for the sports industry. I am naturally always looking for ways to reach out and snag great projects and expose my name. Recently I found myself dreaming big when I heard of a well-known NBA mascot returning to its original home.
If you are of an age where you can actually remember the 90’s you will recall the strong presence of the Charlotte Hornets and their brand. Remember those awesome starter jackets and apparel? The Hornets stood out with their unique and very bright teal and purple color scheme. Those uniforms rocked! I think it’s safe to say the Hornets made a statement back then.
When I heard the great news that they would be returning to Charlotte, my wheels started turning. I knew it was probably a shot in the dark but I had to see if I could get a bite. One has to start somewhere right?
After some homework, I began sending emails to key people at Charlotte but unfortunately received no responses. I knew I had to take it up a level and really get something in front of someone. I proceeded to do something I wouldn’t normally do. I took that shot in the dark and decided to move forward in showing them one concept I had for the new Charlotte Hornets logo. Finally, I created a presentation, package and delivery system that was sure to get in front of someone.
Above is the concept I designed. I had a few ideas, but with not having any direction from them, I decided to keep it somewhat traditional and keep the same overall feel of the old hornet, but with a crisp modernization.
This is the package I sent and I did receive a response, but unfortunately, it was notifying me that they are not currently accepting outside creative work. I don’t consider it a loss. I took a shot, I succeeded in getting in front of them, and I enjoyed creating a concept.
Sometimes you just have to dream big!
